Keep your Romaine Fresh and Bring back that crunch
Are you having trouble with your Romaine lettuce?
Here are some tips on storing your romaine and ways on bringing it back to fresh levels.

PROPER STORAGE OF ROMAINE LETTUCE
Wrap in Paper Towels:
After washing and drying the leaves, wrap them in paper towels to absorb excess moisture. Place the wrapped leaves in a plastic bag or container with a loose cover.
Use a Salad Spinner:
If you have a salad spinner, use it to thoroughly dry the lettuce before storing it. Excess moisture can lead to faster spoilage.
Store in the Crisper Drawer:
The crisper drawer in your refrigerator is designed to maintain the right humidity levels for vegetables, helping to keep your lettuce fresh longer.
Avoid Washing Before Storage:
If you don’t plan to use the lettuce immediately, avoid washing it until you’re ready. The added moisture can speed up spoilage.
Use a Container with a Lid:
Store the lettuce in a container with a lid, but make sure there is some airflow. You can use a container with a vent or leave a small gap for air circulation.
BRINGING IT BACK TO CRISPNESS
Ice Water Bath:
Fill a large bowl with ice water and submerge the wilted lettuce leaves in it. Let them sit for about 15-30 minutes. The cold water helps the cells in the lettuce rehydrate and regain their crispness.
Refrigerate in Ice Water:
After the ice water bath, you can transfer the lettuce to a sealed container filled with cold water and refrigerate for a few hours. This further helps in crisping up the leaves.
Moist Paper Towels:
Lay the wilted lettuce leaves on a damp (not soaking wet) paper towel and roll them up. Place the rolled-up leaves in a plastic bag and refrigerate for a few hours. The moisture from the paper towel helps the leaves rehydrate.
By following these tips, you can extend the freshness of romaine lettuce and revive it if it starts to wilt.
