Local Fare Jax founder responds to Produce Parasite Outbreak
ou may have seen the latest headlines about a produce-related Cyclospora outbreak linked to iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico (via Taylor Farms) and distributed through a large industrial, multistate supply chain traveling across thousands of miles.
Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that has contaminated produce when human waste enters agricultural water, irrigation systems or areas where food is grown, harvested or handled.
“The parasite originates in human waste, but it does not become infectious immediately. It must remain in the environment for at least one to two weeks to mature. If contaminated water then comes into contact with fresh produce, the parasite can cling to the food and eventually make its way into someone’s digestive system. It can cause frequent watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, loss of appetite, weight loss and extreme fatigue and symptoms may last for weeks if the illness is not treated.”

This is why knowing where your food comes from and how it reaches you matters.
When you are part of a local food network like Local Fare, you are dealing with a much shorter and more transparent supply chain including much higher standards for irrigation and water quality. Produce comes directly from our farmers to us and then to you often within 48 hours.
With a shorter supply chain it means fewer stops, fewer hands handling it, less time in transit and greater traceability if a concern ever arises. Large-scale commercial supply chains can move food thousands of miles and distribute one source across numerous states, stores and restaurants allowing a single contamination event to affect far more families.
Buying in season and local isn’t only about better flavor and fresher produce which heavily reduces the risk of such outbreaks and concerns that stem from industrial farms & out of country sourced items. It also means knowing your farmer, understanding your food’s journey and having greater peace of mind about what you’re feeding your family.
